Landmark tower to be demolished

EASTERN Heights’ landmark water tower will be demolished despite an outcry from surrounding residents who called for the structure to be saved.

The Pettigrew Hill Water Reservoir was built in 1929 to supply water to nearby properties using a gravity feed system.

It was decommissioned in 2009 when a booster pump was installed in the area to allow the water network to operate more efficiently.

The iconic tower had been repurposed as a phone tower but has already been replaced with a modern, steel phone tower built by Optus on the same block which residents said could only be described as an eyesore.
