MORE than 100 enthusiastic golfers teed off in the 2024 Rosewood Lions Charity Golf Day competition, on a very warm spring morning in October.
The golf day was held as a fundraiser and ever since 2018, has honoured the memory of the late Noel Hayes, a founding member and Life Member of the Rosewood Golf Club and a life member of the Lions Club of Rosewood. The first Lions Charity Golf Day was held in 1976.
Play began that Saturday (October 19) at 8.30am with a shotgun start, although as the day's co-ordinator, Lion Eirys Heit explained, an ear-piercingly loud horn does the job of the shotgun, nowadays.
Trophies were provided for the winners, with a chance to have their name on the perpetual trophy, and rundown for the next five place getters in the two person Ambrose event.
“There were eight nearest the pin prizes, four for men and four for the ladies and two approach shots,” Eirys said.
“The trophies were donated by Rosewood Lions and Community Bank Rosewood & District Branch Bendigo Bank.
“Lion Bernie Newell donated $50 for the best NTP. This prize went to Shane Browning, for his shot that landed 23cm from the pin.”
Raffle prizes were all donated by local businesses, Rosewood Lions, George’s Garage, Foote Pharmacy Rosewood, Harry’s Café, Drakes Supermarket, the family of the late Noel Hayes and Lions Josephine and Eirys.
“Everyone seemed very happy with the 17 prizes on offer,” she said. “Everyone buying raffle tickets received a free pen courtesy from Community Bank Rosewood & District.”
Lions members sold out at the barbeque.
“I believe a special guest slithered by the workers in the barbeque area,” Eirys reported.
“Lion Josephine said she saw a large red-bellied black snake and asked him what he was doing? He said that he had come for a steak burger, but Lion Lyall promptly told him that he had sold out, but he could possibly offer a snake burger. I’m told he quickly slithered in under the golf club house.”
Eirys acknowledged all those who had helped make the day the success it was, including Lions President Mike and his wife Glenda.
“Glenda helped me with the drawing and presentation of all the raffle prizes. President Mike thanked all the players for their attendance and then presented all the winning trophies assisted by me.”
