Mount Marrow State School is one of the local schools which will soon have Flashing School Zone Signs installed to improve safety.
HAIGSLEA State School, Mount Marrow State School and the West Moreton Anglican College will have Flashing School Zone Signs installed to improve safety around their school.
In addition, the transport zones around Haiglea, Walloon and Yamanto schools will undergo safety upgrades.
The ‘flashing lights’ program funding is allocated on the basis of a risk assessment which compares all school zones in the state to determine which school zones would benefit the most from the technology.
School zones with a significant crash history, a high level of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and higher speed limits or visibility problems are prioritised.
Minister for Transport, Mark Bailey, said the safety upgrades are funded through the School Transport Infrastructure Program and is open to state and non-state schools, and applications can be made by parents and citizens associations, members of the community, road authorities, and schools.
The funding is offered on a dollar-for-dollar basis, with the total cost of each project announced as:
• Haigslea – safety zone upgrade - $197,000.
• Walloon – safety zone upgrade - $280,000.
• Yamanto – safety zone upgrade - $204,000.
Minister Bailey also said the projects help to create jobs for local businesses and contractors, with an average of 15 jobs supported over the life of the program of works.
Minister for Education Grace Grace added that the program had delivered new carparks, pedestrian crossings, stop, drop and go zones, bus and vehicle turnarounds, footpaths, and dedicated turning lanes around Queensland.
“Coupled with the installation of flashing school zone signs at 300 locations across the state, this investment benefits all road users, particularly children travelling to and from school.”
The flashing lights school zone signs consist of a standard school zone sign, incorporating a flashing red circle and twin alternate flashing yellow lights that are mounted above the school zone plate.
The red circle and twin yellow lights flash during the hours of operation of the school zone and to signal motorists to slow down to the posted speed during specific hours of school operation.
