THE LNP have announced a candidate for the state seat of Ipswich West following sitting member, Darren Zanow, after his shock resignation due to ill health last Friday.
The LNP have endorsed Ipswich resident, Georgia Toft, as the party’s candidate for the seat which takes in much of the Moreton Border News circulation area.
Mr Zanow announced he would not contest the election on October 26 after a diagnosis of incurable degenerative brain disease, Microvascular Ischemic Disease.
Ms Toft has been running Mr Zanow’s electorate office since his election on April 16.
Mr Zanow said he was diagnosed with the disease on the very day he was sworn in.
“I love this community, and I have fought hard for the people all my life.
“Serving this amazing community as an MP is one of the greatest honours of my life but because of this disease, my time in public office and likely my life, will be cut short.
“The prognosis for me requires that I must turn my attention immediately to the needs of my daughter, Lola, who is aged 7 and to those of our wider family.”
On Monday, he gave his full backing to Ms Toft.
“Georgia is the right person to continue fighting for a fair share for Ipswich West and help deliver the change our community deserves.”
Ms Toft has deep roots in the Ipswich West community including as a member of the Ipswich Show Society Board and Rotary Club of Ipswich City, work as an assistant coach at North Tigers Juniors Rugby League and as an alumnus of West Moreton Anglican College.
LNP Queensland Senator Paul Scarr was quick to thank Mr Zanow for his “outstanding service to our region”.
“I first met Darren in his capacity as President of the Ipswich Show Society. I was immediately struck by his drive, leadership and commercial acumen,” Senator Scarr said.
“It is very rare to see someone with such an accomplished record in business, community service and politics.
“Darren’s openness in discussing his condition and dedication to seeing out this term of parliament is testament to his character.”
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding added: “As a lifelong resident of Ipswich, Darren has contributed significantly to the community as President of the Ipswich Show Society and board member of the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies.
“His leadership and dedication will leave a lasting impact on the Ipswich community, who I know will stand united in support of Darren and his family during this difficult time.”
Ms Toft will run against Ipswich West Labor candidate Wendy Bourne and Greens candidate Mark Delaney in the state election.
