4 min read

THE community’s biggest event of the year, the Rosewood Show, attracted a record crowd, this year.

On Friday, there was the ever-popular Dog Show and this year, another main attraction was the beginning of the inaugural Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Challenge, in honour of a young woman and enthusiastic supporter of the Show who was remembered as an accomplished local cattle breeder, a judge and as a mentor to the youth in this field.

Lilly Wingfield from Durong won the Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge in the stud beef section and the Rosewood State High School won the Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge School Award.

On Friday, the main pavilions also opened, to showcase local talent in many sections such as fine art, cooking, photography, woodwork, produce, scrapbooking and many more categories and sections.

Friday night’s Bull Ride drew a record crowd, who from start to finish were entertained by some of the region’s best bull riders, who all competed to hold on for the adrenaline charged eight seconds.

Talented Mt Cotton bull rider, Lleyton Browne, was the 2023 Rosewood Show Bull Ride Champion.

On the main day, the Show was officially opened by special guest, Eirys Heit. She was invited to open the annual show, due to her lifelong commitment to community and for her exceptional dedication to volunteer service.

Eirys said she was honoured to be involved and explained that over the years she has volunteered and has been involved in the Show in many ways.

“My involvement with the Rosewood Show goes back many years, through the Rosewood State School community in setting up their school display and organising the children in the cooking section,” she said.

“Then I was involved with the Ashwell State School fundraising burger stall, and also with the Rosewood Lions, where on many occasions I have welcomed families on the front gate, sometimes in the pouring rain and also in the freezing cold.

“I have also enjoyed volunteering behind the bar, where many stories were told.

“The Show has always been a special occasion – a place where you can enjoy everything from a dagwood dog through to the excitement of the rides, the show bags and just the overall atmosphere with family and friends.”

In memory of many show society members and volunteers who have been part of this close-knit community, a one-minute’s silence was held. This gave family members and friends a moment to reflect on their loved one’s contribution and passion for the Show and the community.

The Rosewood Show was established in 1877, by local farmers as a way to showcase the produce that was grown from the rich soils of the district.

Now an event that has evolved in many ways, Rosewood Show Society President Pat Lenihan said it keeps growing bigger and bigger each year.

He spoke of his pride in the committee and all the volunteers.

“Congratulations to everyone who entered and who took part in this year’s Show and I give a special congratulations to all of the winners,” he said.

Among the many prize winners, was the Rosewood State School who were announced as the first-place winners of the school displays section.

The school’s display included sunflowers hand painted by the students and promoted the message of kindness. Ashwell State School won second place followed by St Brigid’s Catholic Primary school who received third place.

In the Kindergarten section, the Rosewood and District Kindergarten won first place, followed by the Rosewood Early Education Centre and the West Moreton Community Kindergarten.

Alongside the school’s displays was the poultry section, produce, a live bee and honey information stand, horticulture displays, horse events and the stud beef cattle section.

In the stud beef cattle section, Grand Champion British Exhibit went to Aleon Lady Emily, Grand Champion European Exhibit and Supreme Champion Exhibit of Show was won by Brendale Scooter and the Grand Champion Tropical Exhibit was won by Kenview Gus.

Among the crowd pleasing events were the Moreton Border News sponsored Dog Jumping, the pig racing, a reptile show, free pony rides, an interactive petting zoo, safety demonstrations from the Rosewood Fire and Rescue crew and a step back in time was enjoyed by all families with an old machinery display.

The two day event concluded with a spectacular show from Rooftop Express, and live music from band Route 33, that went late into the night.
