Vic Ashton presented with a walk down memory lane

ROSEWOOD Cabanda Care resident Vic Ashton has been presented with a framed photograph illustrating a piece of history that was named in honour of he and his family.

The presentation was made by David Pahlke and George Hatchman.

The location in the photograph is Ashton’s Corner in Amberley which is adjacent to where the Ashton family lived before the State Government purchased their property to expand the RAAF base.

Up until that time, Vic and his wife, Val, were dairy farmers whose farm was established in 1953 by Vic’s parents, Bill and Lillian Ashton.

As well as working the farm, Vic and Val volunteered for numerous community groups and it was because of this community spirit that the corner was named in recognition of the Ashton family.

In 2007, when David Pahlke was an Ipswich City Councillor and George Hatchman was President of the Willowbank Area Group, they worked to have the name given official recognition.

David said that Ashton’s Corner was a very special piece of the local area’s history and represents an important story of a family who he refers to as friendly, caring and passionate about the community and its people.

“Over the years I was fortunate enough to build a good friendship with Vic and Val, which provided me with the opportunity to witness their love for family and also their community,” he said.

“George and I also have remained great friends, and as a way of showing Vic after all of these years that his history is still very important, the idea came together to present Vic with a framed picture of Ashton’s Corner.

“This was also important because as a resident of Cabanda, Vic can have his history with him, placed on his wall as a reminder of where he came from and what his family had achieved.”

Val Ashton passed away on March 22, 2023.

David said that when Vic was presented with the framed picture he was overwhelmed and very grateful.

“It seemed that George and I had made Vic’s day.

“His face lit up and he was very happy to see the picture.”
