WEST Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) is celebrating two outstanding team performances and a higher level individual achievement in sport.
The unbeaten Firsts girls’ football team sealed their sensational season by winning the TAS (The Associated Schools) Premiership following a thrilling 2-all grand final draw.
One of the team’s stars is 15-year-old Layla Fulton, who has been chosen to represent Australia in futsal.
Fulton is preparing to play for her country in Brazil in August after representing the Queensland City under-14 team at the National Schools Futsal Championships last year.
The attacking midfielder was chosen after playing for WestMAC in the Brisbane Metro School Futsal titles earlier this year.
The Queensland City side Fulton lined up in won the national grand final 3-2 against Queensland West following a tough semi-final victory against Tasmania in a penalty shootout.
Fulton scored more than a dozen goals for Queensland City.
WestMAC student Layla Fulton is preparing to represent Australia in futsal.
The Year 10 student only started playing futsal in 2021.
“I was surprised but excited when I was selected to represent Australia and I’m really looking forward to going to Brazil,” Fulton said.
She was thrilled to share in WestMAC’s latest TAS football success.
“Our team has such great team spirit and it’s such a great group of girls to play with,” she said.
WestMAC dominated the first half of the grand final with wingers Charlotte Lax and Evie Schultz scoring. John Paul College fought back in the second half to equalise.
WestMAC’s superb soccer season provided a double celebration. WestMAC has become the first school to win a record six consecutive TAS Champion Cricket School titles.
“Our students receive access to specialised coaching sessions from internal and external staff,’’ teacher and sport coordinator Robert Hillier said.
“In football, we have a link with local club Western Pride, with expert club coaches helping to mentor our senior players to soar to new heights resulting in the feat of securing a premiership with the Firsts team.’’
Three of the College’s five cricket teams progressed to their respective grand finals with the Intermediate Seconds sealing a premiership.
Hillier said that highlighted the College’s sporting depth.
“It is rewarding to see that our approach of giving students access to high-level training and specialist coaching, from junior years and onwards, has paid dividends with students achieving individual and team excellence,” he said.
The College has also claimed two of the five premierships since girls’ football was introduced to the TAS competition schedule in 2019. WestMAC also won the 2020 premiership.
In other premiership news, the undefeated Year 7 Girls’ basketball team won a TAS title with a commanding 40-20 victory over Cannon Hill Anglican College.
